Member Spotlight: Spark Underwriters: Built Inside the Vehicle Industry

Running a vehicle repair or service business means managing risks that many insurers rarely see up close. From rapidly evolving vehicle technologies to specialized tools and skilled labor, the day-to-day realities of the industry are highly technical.

Insurance can play an important role in protecting these businesses, but only when it reflects how they actually operate.

“To insure this industry well, you have to understand the businesses themselves,” the SPARK Underwriters team explains. “You have to know how they work, what their risks actually look like, and what they deal with every day.”

SPARK UW specializes in the vehicle services sector, working with businesses ranging from single store repair shops to the largest multiple store operators across the industry. The company’s philosophy is simple: solutions should be built around the way the industry works, not the other way around.

“We like to say we’re more than insurance,” the team explains. “For us, that means understanding the businesses we serve and building solutions that genuinely fit them.”

Close to the Industry

Founder David Willett began his career working in underwriting and actuarial roles focused on the automotive aftermarket. Over time, that experience evolved into a highly specialized understanding of the vehicle services ecosystem.

Today, SPARK UW’s team stays closely connected to the industry through trade associations, educators, and OEs. Several team members hold professional certifications tied directly to vehicle repair and service disciplines. That involvement helps SPARK UW stay in step with the changes in repair procedures, technology, and emerging risks.

“We’re embedded in the industry.  In fact we could work in their shop,” the team explains. “We are known for competing in welding contests instead of the golf outing like most insurance professionals.”

That close connection also shapes SPARK UW’s approach to risk.

SPARK UW works with a wide range of businesses across the vehicle services market. Some clients benefit from traditional insurance structures, while others require more tailored approaches depending on their size, complexity, or operational profile.

Rather than steering businesses toward a particular model, Spark focuses on understanding each client’s situation first.

“We’re not trying to push anyone into one solution,” the team says. “Our role is to figure out what structure makes the most sense for their business.”

This flexibility allows Spark to support companies at different stages of growth, from independent operators to larger organizations with more complex risk profiles.

Innovation Through Industry Data

SPARK UW’s close ties to the vehicle services industry create opportunities to develop new solutions for the businesses it serves.

One example is the development of a synthetic captive structure designed for certain vehicle service businesses with larger or more complex operations, including Spark’s agent and distribution partners. The program was built using industry-specific data tied directly to the exposures SPARK UW sees across the market.

By focusing on the data most relevant to the businesses being insured, the team was able to design a structure tailored to the needs of its clients and partners.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with Accelerant, whose Risk Exchange platform provides the long-term capacity and underwriting support needed to bring innovative structures like this to market.

The program launched recently and has already generated strong interest among SPARK UW’s clients and partners, opening new conversations about how businesses in the vehicle sector can participate more actively in managing their risk.

“It’s opening up new conversations about how businesses can participate more actively in managing their risk,” the team explains.

Working with Accelerant

SPARK UW joined the Accelerant Risk Exchange several years ago. The partnership has provided the long-term support needed to bring ideas like the synthetic captive initiative to market while maintaining SPARK UW’s specialist focus.

For SPARK UW’s leadership, that commitment has been particularly meaningful.

“Accelerant made a long-term commitment to us,” the team says. “That allows us to think about building solutions for the future.”

Through the partnership, SPARK UW combines its deep industry expertise with Accelerant’s capabilities in data, analytics, and underwriting support.

Looking Ahead

The vehicle services sector continues to evolve quickly. New technologies and shifting business models are reshaping the industry.

For SPARK Underwriters, staying uncommonly close to the businesses it serves will remain the key to navigating those changes.

Markets will continue to evolve, and risk solutions will need to evolve alongside them.

The team says “our firsthand experience, networks, and relationships will allow us to be the market leader the vehicle services industry wants and needs to navigate the future.”
