At Accelerant, we’re motivated by our mission to rebuild insurance so it’s fair, transparent, and efficient. We’re often asked what it’s like to work at a global company with an audacious vision, so we’d give a peek behind the scenes through our Employee Perspectives… series. After all, people are at the heart of what we do, and we’re proud to bring together individuals and teams who share our passion for creating an amazing experience and working in an amazing environment. In today’s spotlight, meet Julia Raftery,  Claims Manager at Accelerant.

What brought you to Accelerant and the world of insurance?

A former colleague, who is now a dear friend, reached out regarding an opportunity at Accelerant. Based on her experience here, I had a good feeling about it, and after interviewing, it felt like a great fit.

Describe your day-to-day work at Accelerant.

Every day is a bit different, which is something I love about it. Staying connected is important as a remote company, so we have a lot of video calls that help build structure into our days and weeks. I manage several programs, so we meet to discuss the programs as a whole and claim-related meetings to go through losses of note and trends we’re seeing. Onboarding new programs and business partners is a big part of my day-to-day life, and there are a lot of moving parts, and a lot of questions always arise.

If you weren’t in your current profession, what alternative path might you have pursued?

When I was younger, I worked in a hospital and then at a pharmacy for many years. I’ve always loved helping people and thought I might end up somewhere in the healthcare industry.

What is the most exciting part of your job?

Our Members — they are all so unique, so we are constantly looking for creative solutions to serve them best. I learn a lot from them through discussions about their respective industries, which helps tailor our approach to each of their programs.

What are your favorite activities or hobbies outside of work?

I love to travel, and I try to visit a few new countries a year. I also love photography, especially capturing new places, so the two really go hand in hand. What would you say to someone considering a career in your industry? I’ve had great experiences working for small, new, and innovative companies in the insurance industry. I love working with people who have felt that there is a better way to provide insurance solutions and have worked to build something completely different.
